“Torrente 4” could reverse the situation in Spanish cinema

Torrente 4. Lethal Crisis (Crisis letal) already has become the Spanish film with more copies distributed: apportioned to 657 theaters around the country. Until now, the record was held by the animation film “Planet 51”, with 600. We must search through the worldwide box office hits as “Avatar” or «Pirates of
the Caribbean” to find a film with a higher distribution in Spain.
Converted into the first European comedy in 3D (the price for admission to see the film is over 10 Euros, more than 300 copies were distributed using this technology.)
The story anticipates being the salvation of the Spanish box office, with permission from Almodovar (whom opens in September “La piel del habito”). In 1998, when the dynasty began with “El brazo tonto de la ley”, the movie collected almost 10.9 million Euros with only 124 copies, an average which is the dream of any distributor. The sequel, in which the detective left “Mision a Marbella” (2001), collected more than double: 22.1 million Euros with 303 copies. Worse, if this comparative accommodates the series, the third functioned, “El protector” (2005), with 18.1 million Euros collected and 465 copies.
This means, so far, the saga has collected 51.1 million Euros, a figure not far removed of the 69.7 million that all the Spanish movies collected at the box office during 2010. The exhibitors must be happy to have this movie in hands, because if their business normally is in selling popcorn than movie tickets, what better than “Torrente” as the hen that lays the golden eggs.
The truth is that, in total, 11.9 million spectators went to the cinemas to discover Torrente in action. The key to its success is the action. Persecutions, fights, shootings… everything fits in this style of comedy uninhibited and shameless that film critics have thrashed, but that the public supports. A colossal promotional campaign and important casting which includes featured soccer players from Atletico and Real Madrid.
According to data obtained in August 2010, has cost some eight million Euros. Have used USA technicians for the 3D and now, all they are missing is the projection abroad. The truth is that Torrente, in view of the figures, at least to the crisis of Spanish cinema yes it is helping out of it.
