Robert McKee currently is the most important script teacher in the world, and his students have won numerous international awards.
Born in Detroit, took a Masters in theatre, in the 70’s decade was a story analyst for NBC and United Artists and began to work as a teacher at San Diego State University. He wrote several feature film scripts, directed television series and short films.
In 1981, McKee began to teach a course called “La Estructura de la Historia” at the University of Southern California, that course with the passage of time, the energy of its creator is what is taught today throughout the world in a record time of 4 days.
He is the author of the book El Guion: substance, style, structure and principles of screen writing, considered by many screenwriters in the world as a source of inspiration. The book is not about “mechanical” aspects of the narrative technique as a pattern or dialogues processed one by one. On the contrary, McKee’s book examines the narrative structure of a work and what makes a story good or bad. This focus can work as an analysis of any narrative gender, whether scripts, plays, literature and may even include other documentary films “that tell a story.”
McKee is well known for his opposition to the established idea that the director is the author of the film. McKee understands that the screenwriter or the writer is indeed the most important creator of the movie. Directors, just like actors are artists who interpret. Actors play a character and directors interpret a script. However, the screenwriter, just like the musical composer is a creative artist who begins with a blank page and ends up with a work.
To demonstrate his point of view, he usually puts the following example: have a screenwriter go to a director with 120 blank pages (a script for a 2 hour movie) and say to him “Direct this!”
McKee, has been hired by companies to teach CEO’s of multiple companies (Pixar, Disney, Microsoft, and Paramount) around the world about the commercial virtues to tell a compelling (and not a blind optimistic) life story of a corporation.
